I have a new bag crush: Hermès Birkin

Most bag hags probably have the Hermès Birkin on the top of their wishlist. I love bags but I’ve never really dreamt about owning a Birkin. I’ve always preferred the Hermès Kelly over it as it has straps plus, I’m turned off by some women who tote the bag as if it was the most precious thing in the world or styling it very matronly. Until now. I blame Olivia Palermo, Kate Moss, Margot Tenenbaum and Marc Jacobs for my Birkin infatuation. They wear the bag in an effortless manner and chic style.

Socialite Olivia Palermo’s most iconic look in my book is her chambray shirt paired with black pants, blue suede shoes and Hermès Birkin ensemble. She totally rocked the Birkin bag!

Pants suit + Pumps + Hermès Birkin = Perfection, Olivia! Per. Fec. Shun.

Neutrals, unkept hair and an Hermès Birkin make Mary Kate Olsen the Queen of cool.

Take cue from Nicole Ritchie on how to not look “matronic”: Cape + Tattered jeans + Open Hermès Birkin bag

The only colored Hermès Birkin I like as seen on Katie Holmes

Mama “Birkin!” Only Kate Moss looks cool with a white Hermès Birkin.

Boots & Birkin for Marc Jacobs. Yaaaaaaaaas!

Love the eclectic look on “Birkin” boy Pharrell!

According to Susannah Frankel, Fashion Editor at The Independent and who wrote ‘Ready To Wear: The only way a Birkin should be carried is open,’ “a status bag is all well and good, but it’s also somewhat on the smart side. Smart is rarely fashionable and so, while mere mortals might protect such precious items, wrapping them carefully in their dust sheaths once they’re done with them, the rich and famous prefer theirs battered to within an inch of their lives. And never closed. The luxury of not caring is the story here, whatever the consequences.”

In 1981, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. She had just placed her straw bag in the overhead compartment of her seat, but the contents fell to the deck, leaving her to scramble to replace them. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked. In 1984, he created a black supple leather bag for her, based on an 1892 design.

On that note, when I buy my own Hermès Birkin, I’d probably opt for a second-hand or pre-loved one so that it’s already worn in. Bawal daw ang mukhang bago kasi! Haha

Classic never goes out of style.
